My husband and I are musicians. And we’re parents. When we are onstage, we do our best to really be ON stage. But all our “backstage” experiences with our son (our little frog) deeply affect who we are as people, thus musicians. Recent insights:

Earlier this morning, I blogged about a few of our strategies for touring with a toddler.

I didn’t mention that we have, of course, been reading a LOT of books on the road… maybe even more than at home, although reading is always a big daily activity in our family. In addition to books from home, German friends have shared a few faves, so Nigel is also getting exposure to Deutsch.

Today my voice was getting tired from reading, so I asked Nigel to read to us (me and my husband Matt). My son is a lovely, chatty boy and often has interesting things to say. But even we were surprised when Nigel grabbed a book and began his tale with this opening sentence:

“One beautiful morning, Henry the Frog and Anna played violins on the stage.”

Note: we have never read this sentence, or this sentiment, in any book to date. Henry the Frog is a character in an ongoing bedtime story that Matt invents for Nigel. And surely we have read ‘One beautiful morning’ in some book… but I can’t think of books in our regular repertoire that contain this phrase.

After this gorgeous start, Nigel’s went on to explain that the duo played “the best of the song it had ever been to hear.” And then Thomas the Tank Engine made an abrupt entrance. From there things took a surreal turn, until the story sort of fizzled and Nigel began jumping on the bed.

If we get nothing else out of our travels throughout Europe, we’ll at least have the start of a new novel.
